Cold weather fun

Don't let winter keep you on the ground

After the checkride

Winter weather brings its problems: snow, sleet, freezing rain. There’ll be plenty of times when you’ll have to hunker down and remain on the ground. But don’t let cold temperatures by themselves keep you from the skies. Cold air causes aircraft engines to perform better, the wings will be more efficient, and you’ll notice the difference.

Land on ice— on purpose

When the temperatures plunge, Alton Bay Seaplane Base (B18) in Alton Bay, New Hampshire, becomes a seasonal ice runway. If it’s cold enough, the ice runway (1/19) generally opens around mid- to late January and remains open until March 15, unless conditions deteriorate. The runway is 2,600 feet by 100 feet. Pilots should call the airport (603-875-3498) to check on conditions before launching.
