Garmin updates Pilot app for helos

Garmin International has updated its Garmin Pilot app for Apple devices with helicopter routes and obstacles along routes.Garmin now offers a new version of Garmin Pilot for Apple devices tailored to helicopter operators. It includes helicopter route charts for eight United States metropolitan areas and the Gulf of Mexico. It also allows pilots to identify and document the highest obstacle along their flight plan route.

These three-color charts depict helicopter airways and routes, heliports with associated frequency and lighting capabilities, navigation aid information, and obstructions. Pictorial symbols, roads, and geographical features are notated for easier identification in urban areas with high concentrations of helicopter activity.

Garmin Pilot includes VFR and IFR Helicopter Route Charts for eight metropolitan areas: Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York. Coverage for the Gulf of Mexico is also available including offshore oil drilling.

For helicopter air ambulance operators, rules recently established by the FAA requiring pilots to identify and document the highest obstacle along a planned route can now be fulfilled within Garmin Pilot. When entering a departure and destination airport pair, Garmin Pilot identifies the highest obstacle along the route of flight in mean sea level and above ground level altitudes on the flight plan page and on the moving map page.

The latest version of Garmin Pilot for iOS is available in the Apple App Store as a free download for the first 30 days. An annual subscription is $74.99.
