Question of the Week
Question

Holding short of the runway, waiting for an intersection departure, I heard the pilot of the aircraft ahead of me waive a wake turbulence hold from air traffic control. I didn't know that you could waive wake turbulence holds from ATC. Where can I learn more?
Answer
You can waive wake turbulence holds from ATC when utilizing intersection takeoffs by making a specific request (see section 4-3-10(f) of the Aeronautical Information Manual). However, wake turbulence from heavier aircraft and helicopters can be fatal. Wingtip vortices have flipped aircraft close to the ground, which is usually unrecoverable. You also can request a longer delay if conditions are conducive to making wake turbulence worse (for example, a slight quartering tailwind). Waiting a few minutes isn't as bad as the alternative.
