Built to be wild
In World War II's Pacific theater, no aircraft took on more of an early combat burden than the Grumman F4F Wildcat, which by 1942 was flown by every fighter squadron of the U.S. Navy. Suited to carrier operations because of its size, 5,700-pound weight, and fuselage-flush-folded wings, Wildcats were built by the thousands, with some going to our British and French allies. A historical note records that on Dec. 25, 1940, a Wildcat scored the first victory by a British-flown American fighter when it downed a Junkers Ju88 dive bomber.
