Classic Collector: David Marco

Only the best will do

We’ve all played the game where we dream about our perfect airplane. Usually it evolves to be many perfect airplanes, because every genre and era has its best. David Marco decided to act on that game, and he’s winning.

Walk into his custom hangars at Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport and you might think his collection is unfocused. But Marco’s logic is sound, and when you see the airplanes through his eyes, it’s impressive. Marco didn’t want a collection of warbirds, or vintage, or sport airplanes. He wanted the best of his favorite categories housed in the best hangar.

More than a place to house aircraft, the hangar is a place to display Marco’s passion for aviation and the people who love it. In addition to the airplanes you’ll find historical displays of military memorabilia and a custom Quonset hut. He and his family have hosted balls and other big events in the space. “It’s not open to the public,” he said. “It’s open to any pilot.”

The airplanes are the star of the show. Marco wanted the best fighter, and the P–51 Sizzlin’ Liz certainly fits the criteria. The name and livery pay homage to Maj. Gerald Montgomery, an ace with 14.5 kills in World War II.

For twin-engine fans, the best of the art deco era is Marco’s brilliant Lockheed 12A Electra Junior. Marco said his Lockheed, which was originally purchased by Phillips 66 as a corporate aircraft, is one of only eight still flying. Soon after purchasing it, he had the aircraft completely restored, and today it looks as good as new.

Trying to pick the best bushplane could bring about some disagreement, although it is hard to argue that Marco’s de Havilland Beaver is anything but spectacular. Most Beavers tend to match their surroundings and proudly display their years of hard work. Marco’s is more like a showpiece that is used primarily for family fun. “The Beaver is the most romantic bushplane ever built,” he said.

Finally, although it might not be flashy, Marco operates a Cessna Citation CJ2+ as a corporate aircraft for his business. Efficient and reliable, the Citation would at least be a finalist for best corporate aircraft. Even with a hangar of drool-worthy airplanes, Marco said he still gets great satisfaction from flying the CJ2+, especially as part of a professional two-crew scenario.

Marco’s son is a third-generation pilot who flies most of the aircraft but loves flying acro in the family’s Decathlon, arguably the best aerobatic trainer.

This isn’t a sedentary collection. The family keeps the collection flying about once a week. “I feel more who I want to be when I’m aviating than anything else I’m doing,” Marco said.
