Hayward Air Rally registration open

Last year’s rally was the subject of a feature article, "Racing against the plan," in the September 2017 issue of AOPA Pilot. The article details the planning involved, the precision timing required to achieve a good score, and the camaraderie that develops among the pilots—some of whom have participated in the rally regularly for decades.

Proceeds from the rally fund scholarships for up to two deserving students to attend the EAA Air Academy, including tuition and round-trip airfare. In partnership with local EAA chapters and The Ninety-Nines, the International Organization of Women Pilots, the Hayward Air Rally has announced Sabrina Sutter of Shingletown, California, and Jackson Bellard of Carson City, Nevada, as this year’s scholarship recipients. “With the generous support of the City of Hayward, our industry partners and sponsors, and participating Rally pilots and crew, we are pleased to continue our scholarship program this year,” said Chris Verbil of the Hayward Air Rally Committee. “As part of our nonprofit mission, it is important to assist in the education of our next generation of aircraft pilots, aerospace industry professionals, and aviation enthusiasts.”

The Hayward Air Rally Inc., is a not-for-profit California public benefit corporation and charitable organization with IRS 501(c)(3) status. Originally conceived by the city of Hayward’s mayor in 1964, the air rally’s primary charter is to enhance general aviation safety by encouraging pilots to stay proficient in basic flight navigation and fuel management techniques.

The fifty-fourth annual air rally will originate at the Hayward Executive Airport and follow a challenging route to Redding, California, and conclude at Reno/Stead Airport. The rally is not a speed event; navigation skills and fuel management will determine your score. After an evening of planning and a long day of flying, participants enjoy a day of activities in Reno that concludes with an awards party featuring good food, trophies, and door prizes.

All piston-powered aircraft are eligible. All certificated pilots, including sport pilots, are eligible to enter; student pilots are welcome to join a certificated pilot and compete in the rally. For more information about the rally or to register, visit the event website.
