Guppy love
Everyone's a plane spotter when an Aero Spacelines Super Guppy is flying. A triumph of function over form, it's how NASA delivers deep-space rocket components from the manufacturing location in Huntsville, Alabama, to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. "The Guppy has a cargo compartment that is 25 feet tall, 25 feet wide and 111 feet long and can carry more than 26 tons," NASA says, noting that the aircraft's "unique hinged nose" opens wide to load its capacious cargoes. NASA's aircraft is one of five built. (Photo courtesy of NASA.)
Final Exam
Question

One of my flight students who is training for a private pilot certificate is prohibited from night flying according to his medical certificate. Is this student still required to receive the night flying dual instruction specified in 14 CFR 61.109(a)(2)?
Answer
Yes. Even though he cannot fly at night solo or as pilot in command, he still must receive the three hours of night training to meet the aeronautical experience requirements for the private pilot practical test.

Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
