Scholarships
Daher scholars' passports punched for France
Students Noa Garcia-Brown and Riley Ferguson were awarded the 2018 EAA/Daher International Scholarships, and they are making plans to join a team of engineers at the aircraft manufacturer's Tarbes, France, facility for five-week internships followed by a week in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, for EAA AirVenture. Ferguson, a private pilot, is double-majoring in neuroscience and English at Vanderbilt University. Garcia-Brown is majoring in aeronautical engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Prescott, Arizona, campus.

Wings, wheels, people; Drones that detect
Mixing airplanes, classic cars, motorcycles, and the local community at AOPA's home airport has proved to be a winning formula for fun, and we visit Denver to check out a robotics show that offered a glimpse at how future drones may detect and avoid your aircraft. Charging into spring
Fly-in season is upon us, a festive time when airshow performers entertain admiring audiences, open-cockpit biplanes return to the skies, and pilots who build their own aircraft proudly display and fly the products of their labors of love. One such homebuilt creation is the tandem-seat, two-place Marquart Charger. It first flew in 1970, has won several Grand Champion awards from the Experimental Aircraft Association, and has done distinguished service introducing young people to aviation through the EAA Young Eagles program.

Question

I attended an AOPA Rusty Pilots seminar recently, and boy, was that a surprise! I am really rusty and haven't flown since the late 1980s. When was all the airspace reclassified with letters?
Answer
Believe it or not, it has been nearly 25 years. The FAA published a rule to establish six classes of airspace designated by a single letter, to conform with International Civil Aviation Organization recommendations, in December 1991. The current system became effective on Sept. 16, 1993.

Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
