Question of the Week
Question

A friend asked me to be his safety pilot while building time for his instrument rating. We flew a cross-country to get some lunch and came back. I was acting pilot in command for the time he was under the hood. I know I can log some PIC time, but can I log cross-country time as well?
Answer
No. You may not log cross-country time because you were not a required crewmember for the entire duration of the flight. Several scenarios regarding logging time as safety pilot can be found in this FAA letter of interpretation.
