Plane Spotter
AOPA
Name that jet
Experienced plane spotters have a sharp eye for detail and a memory for "specs" to help them identify unusual airplanes quickly while others are drawing a blank. If you spot a rare military single-engine jet with tandem seats and shoulder-mounted wings, it's likely a SIAI Marchetti S.211. The jet found its way to private ownership and the airshow circuit, and serves as an advanced trainer for civilian pilots following its introduction for military acquisitions in 1981. Plane spotters note: The S.211 can be mistaken for the Navy's T–45 Goshawk.
Final Exam
Question

My student is ready for night training, and now that it is getting dark earlier, it is the perfect time. However, I have not flown at night since this past spring. Must I make three night takeoffs and landings to be legal to teach my student at night?
Answer
No. On an instructional flight, your student is not considered a passenger, and the requirement to make three night takeoffs and landings does not apply. Although there may be a recency of experience issue here for you if you have not flown much lately, there is no running afoul of the regulations otherwise.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
