Plane Spotter
AOPA
Schweizer's old standard
Long, thin wings (that is, a high aspect ratio) are the most obvious clue that the aircraft you see soaring silently overhead is a glider, not a powered airplane with its throttle pulled back. From that basic spotting rule, sailplane characteristics vary widely, although all exploit the low-drag penalty exacted by those simple-to-spot long wings. A popular glider trainer of long standing is the Schweizer SGS 2-33, a two-place sailplane with strut-braced, tapered high wings, manufactured by Schweizer Aircraft Co., of Elmira, New York, from 1967 to 1981.

Question

I just got back from AOPA's Fly-In at Carbondale, Illinois. It was a great experience. When is the next AOPA Fly-In?
Answer
You can catch the last AOPA Fly-In of 2018 at Gulf Shores, Alabama, on Oct. 26 and 27. Meanwhile, AOPA is finalizing the details for the 2019 fly-ins.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center.
