Tip-tanked trainer
Two-place tandem seats, straight wings mounted at mid-fuselage height, and fuel tanks distinctively mounted at the wingtips are the visual cues to spotting a North American T–2 Buckeye, a 485-knot, 13,179-pound-takeoff-weight, two-engine jet trainer that first flew in 1958 and trained more than 11,000 military pilots before it was retired in 2008. Renowned for safety and reliability, more than 500 Buckeyes were built—as the name hints—in Columbus, Ohio. (U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 2nd Class Danny Ewing Jr.)
