A practical first
Helicopters based on a design of a single main rotor and an aft vertical antitorque rotor are a common sight, but the original—and the first practical helicopter in the United States—was the Vought-Sikorsky VS–300. On Sept. 14, 1939, it made its first flight, tethered, with Igor Sikorsky at the controls. It flew untethered on May 13, 1940, according to Dan Libertino, president of the Igor I. Sikorsky Historical Archives. In this photo, Sikorsky is piloting the VS–300 that is now on display in the Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. (Photo courtesy of Igor I. Sikorsky Historical Archives. Final Exam
Question

If I don't want to take my private pilot practical test with a designated pilot examiner, can I take a flight test with the FAA?
Answer
Yes. FAA inspectors can perform flight tests. A word of caution, however—the system is subject to scheduling delays, and these delays may be extensive with FAA inspectors at offices that are not fully staffed.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
