Strolling Sun ‘n Fun in style

The Koberg family is passing passion for piloting from one generation to the next, and the youngest of them toured the Sun ‘n Fun International Fly-In and Expo in a stylish replica of an XP–82 Twin Mustang.

Les Koberg, a pilot since 1961, has turned his attention to a Cessna 195 restoration since completing a much smaller project, a stroller for the grandkids that bears a strong resemblance to the rare warbird expected to arrive in Lakeland, Florida, on April 3.

“They have a lot of fun,” Koberg said, pausing for a moment to chat about the colorful creation that took about six months to build. He fitted it with electric motors to spin the twin props and run the working flaps. Luke Koberg, 5, and Logan Koberg, 3, have their names painted on the cockpits of this eye-catching creation, and they ride in style among the hundreds of aircraft and scores of displays at a show that’s made it a mission to inspire the next generation of aviators.

“They have a lot of fun,” confirmed mom Christi Koberg, trying unsuccessfully to coax Logan to smile for the camera.

The elder Koberg said flying is very much a family affair: “My son completed my dream. He’s a captain for Southwest.”

Seems likely that another generation will be primed to follow those footsteps.
