Plane Spotter
AOPA
An electric idea
Most plane spotters' sighting logs are filled with conventional takeoff and landing aircraft, and perhaps a few vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Someday those sightings of CTOL and VTOL aircraft may be joined by eVTOLs if electric propulsion can be applied to this cutting-edge realm of aerospace development. One such electric-motored aircraft flew in Canada in September 2018. Astro Aerospace says its full-carbon Elroy eVTOL "can take off, land and perform all stages of flight maneuvering completely autonomously," or the operator can take over for "an eco friendly commute." Question

I just installed an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast unit and have heard that because it is installed I must have it on when I fly. Is this true?
Answer
Yes, it must be used any time you fly based on 14 CFR 91.225(f), which requires full-time use of the unit in the transmit mode once installed. This requirement is independent of the ADS-B Out mandate, 14 CFR 91.225, which requires the equipment to be installed in order to operate in certain airspace after Jan. 1, 2020.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center.
