One big cat
For an aircraft that didn't get to fulfill its original purpose as a carrier-based fighter thanks to World War II's end, Grumman's twin-radial-powered, shoulder-wing, tricycle-gear F7F Tigercat still fit many postwar missions. Some of the 364 Tigercats built were repurposed for reconnaissance, aerial photography, and even air racing. Others found favor as firebombers. A pair of these cats were on the prowl at EAA AirVenture in 2018.

Question

I am training for my instrument rating and noted that of the 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time required, only 15 hours must be training received from an instructor. How do I get the other 25 hours?
Answer
You can fly the additional time with an instructor, or with a qualified safety pilot sitting in the right seat. That time with a safety pilot is normally simulated instrument time acquired in VFR conditions.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
