Question of the Week
Question

Would a wristwatch suffice for the clock required for IFR flight under 14 CFR 91.205(d)? Where can I get guidance on this requirement?
Answer
FAA letters of interpretation can usually shed some light on questions like this where the regulation is unclear. Searching the database returns a letter from 2016 that directly answers this question, stating that the clock used to fulfill this requirement must be an installed appliance. A wristwatch doesn't fulfill the requirement.

This question and answer were provided by AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Got a question for our technical services staff? Contact AOPA.
