Mission specific
If there's an aerial attack in progress on a California wildfire, the state agency whose job it is to suppress backcountry blazes brings impressive resources to the table with dozens of aircraft deployed throughout the state. A mainstay of that mission-specific fleet is the Grumman S–2T, a turboprop upgrade of the 1950s-era Grumman S–2 Tracker, originally designed as a carrier-based anti-submarine aircraft. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection operates 23 S–2Ts that carry a larger retardant payload and are faster, safer, and more maneuverable than the predecessor S–2A.

Question

I have heard the old saying that some regulations are written in blood. What's meant by that?
Answer
For better or worse, some regulations are the product of lessons learned the hard way.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
