Plane Spotter
AOPA
Dove's descendant
A four-engine airliner that entered service with fixed landing gear was a rare bird, even in 1950 when de Havilland introduced an aircraft in that configuration that seated 14 passengers behind the two pilots. Today it requires a rare plane spotter to know that the aircraft in question was the de Havilland DH114 Heron, a stretch of the twin-engine DH104 Dove. The Heron also became the basis for future modifications including the retractable-gear version shown here, and several further upgrades that replaced the original Gipsy Queen 30 engines for better performance.

Question

Am I required to obtain a weather briefing for every VFR flight?
Answer
Not necessarily; it depends on the type of flight. According to 14 CFR 91.103, the pilot in command must obtain "weather reports and forecasts" before a flight "not in the vicinity of an airport," such as a cross-country. Local flights or flights in the traffic pattern do not have this requirement.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
