The new service delivers latitude, longitude, and altitude information from the airplane’s flight management system to ForeFlight apps via Gogo’s onboard Wi-Fi network. This provides iPads and iPhones with Wi-Fi-only connectivity the ability to display navigation information, without the need to install a separate external antenna. It will also benefit iPads and iPhones that have Wi-Fi and cellular capability with more reliable GPS reception. Sometimes, cockpit structures, heated windshields, and mobile protective cases can interfere with GPS reception on devices having their own internal GPS receivers.
The service only works above 10,000 feet msl and not overseas in many nations that do not have ForeFlight coverage.
To use the system, ForeFlight apps must have the Performance Plus subscription service. Gogo’s AVANCE L5/L3 or ATG 4000/5000 routers and other hardware are also required, as are data plans. Gogo plans are also available to allow internet and voice capability.
ForeFlight is only available on iOS devices such as iPhones and iPads.
