Panthera power
Panthera power
Glimpses of flight's future are everywhere as aircraft designers harness lightweight materials and innovative propulsion systems to fly farther on less fuel and reduce carbon emissions. One airplane in that pipeline is the Panthera, a four-place, composite-built, single-engine model with gull-wing doors, retractable gear, glider-like wings, and a prominent T-tail, planned for 2021 delivery from Slovenia's Pipstrel, a NASA Green Flight Challenge winner. The 260-horsepower Panthera replaces heavy hydraulics with electric actuating systems, and next year flight tests will begin on a hybrid-electric edition that could be available by 2023.

Question

I am working toward my private pilot—airplane certificate and was told I could use a simulator to obtain the three hours of instrument training required. Is that correct?
Answer
No. You can credit up to 2.5 hours of simulator time toward the 40 total hours you need, but the three hours of control and maneuvering by reference to instruments must be done in the airplane (see FAR 61.109(a)(3)).
