Nosewheel XCub? Some say, 'Humbug!'
Nosewheel XCub? Some say, 'Humbug!'
There is sporting rivalry between (shall we say, to illustrate the point) pilots of nosewheel, or "tricycle-gear" airplanes and "real pilots," as tailwheel-airplane pilots declare themselves. Many airplanes manufactured with tailwheels have been modified or reintroduced with the third wheel positioned fore, not aft. Recently the tradition—and the razzing—resumed when Cubcrafters' XCub, based on the legendary Piper Cub, debuted in a nosewheel edition. The rolling controversy stems from the idea that taildraggers are more vulnerable to ground looping, requiring their pilots to perform particularly precisely at maintaining directional control.

Question

I recently heard that airline captains can log pilot-in-command time for the entire duration of a flight, even if the first officer is flying the leg. Is that true?
Answer
Yes. An airline captain is required to hold an airline transport pilot certificate and is dispatched as the PIC. The regulations permit the captain to log all flight time while acting as PIC, with no requirement to manipulate the flight controls.

This question and answer were provided by the aviation experts in AOPA's Pilot Information Center. Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training? Membership includes unlimited access to aviation information by phone (800-USA-AOPA, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time) or from AOPA Online.
