ThrustSense autothrottle technology improves safety profile for twins

Innovative Solutions and Support, a systems integrator that designs and manufactures flight guidance and cockpit display systems for original equipment manufacturers and retrofit applications, provided an overview during the National Business Aviation Association convention about the risks of the loss of a single engine in twins.

Fatal accidents in Texas, Hawaii, and Delaware were attributed to loss of power in one engine, and the company described how its new technology—ThrustSense—can mitigate the potentially catastrophic consequences of an engine out.

“Accidents over the past several months are the latest in the catastrophic consequences of losing use of an engine in a multiengine aircraft,” said Innovative Solutions and Support Chairman and CEO Geoffrey Hedrick. “Our patented ThrustSense technology was designed to mitigate this condition. With the loss of control in an engine-out condition, even some of the most experienced pilots may be unable to react accurately enough to restore and maintain control.

“With its proprietary technology, ThrustSense identifies the engine-out condition, even during the challenging periods of takeoff, climb, and landing, and responds by correctly adjusting power in the remaining engine to facilitate the uninterrupted control of the aircraft. By mitigating this dangerous condition, ThrustSense can provide pilots an added layer of protection against the risk of an engine out.”
