Question of the Week
|
Question
A local canine rescue nonprofit is looking for pilots to transport animals to new homes and offering to reimburse for fuel and possibly other operating expenses. FAR Part 91 allows private pilots to share expenses with passengers in some circumstances, but can the pilot legally be reimbursed when carrying animals? Would the answer to this also apply to transporting blood? |
| Answer |
There is no legal way for a pilot to accept money for transporting animals, or any other cargo, without holding at least a commercial pilot certificate, and, in most cases, a Part 135 operating certificate as well. The narrow exceptions that allow private pilots to share expenses all apply to carrying human passengers, and some require prior authorization. Join the discussion >
