AOPA’S AIR SAFETY INSTITUTE RELEASES EARLY ANALYSIS: CESSNA CITATION CRASH VIDEO

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Air Safety Institute (ASI) released a new video from its Early Analysis series providing an initial examination of a recent accident.

On Saturday, July 8, a Cessna Citation 550 crashed on approach into the French Valley Airport in Murrieta/Temecula, California. Sadly, the two pilots and four passengers died in the accident.

The pilots had taken off from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas around 3:15 a.m., bound for the RNAV GPS approach to Runway 18 at French Valley Airport. On their second attempt to fly the missed approach, the airplane crashed around 500 feet short of the runway.

“In Early Analysis: Cessna Citation Crash—Murrieta/Temecula, California, the AOPA Air Safety Institute wants to help pilots understand what is known about the accident as we look at factors that are likely to be a subject of the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and what we can learn as general aviation pilots to fly safer," said ASI Senior Vice President Richard McSpadden.

McSpadden continued, “Weather seems like a dominant factor, but there are other issues to consider, such as possible fatigue, the pilots’ experience and proficiency levels, and then decision making.”

Early Analysis videos provide an initial assessment of prominent mishaps that generate large public interest and may indicate important safety lessons for the general aviation community.
