Expanding its market around the world

The FAA has granted Icon Aircraft’s A5 a type certificate in the primary category, a move the California company says it expects to boost international sales.

With FAA primary category approval, the two-seat amphibian, which flies domestically under U.S. light sport aircraft rules, gains reciprocal agreements that allow it to fly with fewer restrictions in Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America.

“Receiving FAA type certification allows us to expand our market potential around the world,” said Icon CEO Jerry Meyer. Icon was launched with great fanfare and an appealing, folding-wing, spin-resistant design in 2008 and went into production in Vacaville, California, in 2014. FAA production certification is expected by mid-2024.

More than 200 A5s have been produced to date, and the current retail price is $394,000.
