Soar with the Blue Angels

New documentary goes behind the scenes of the iconic jet team

A “relentless pursuit of excellence” is what captures our imagination when we watch the U.S. Navy Blue Angels elite flight demonstration squadron, says film producer J.J. Abrams. “It’s a message that I think will be as inspiring to the audience as it has been to the filmmakers.”

Photography by Michael R Lopez.Abrams is speaking of the new documentary The Blue Angels that he coproduced with Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell and others, which was released in IMAX May 17 and is now showing on Amazon Prime Video.

Never-before-seen footage chronicles a year with the team, from selection through training and the demanding show season. The documentary follows veteran pilots and the new class of Navy and Marine Corps flight squadron showcasing “the extraordinary teamwork, passion, and pride that fuels America’s best, the Blue Angels,” according to press releases.

The Blue Angels have been thrilling people for more than 75 years. The film takes audiences “soaring with the team as never before.” Filmed for IMAX, the immersive footage puts viewers into the cockpit for a “firsthand view of the Blue Angels’ flying” and also takes audiences behind the scenes for a “revealing, in-depth look at what it takes to become a Blue Angel—from the careful selection process to the challenging training regimen, and on through their show season.”

The film marks the first time the iconic blue and yellow F/A–18 Super Hornets are shown in IMAX. The film “also captures the spectacle of this traveling air show through key members of the support staff on the ground, as well as from loved ones left at home.”
