Pilots using the popular AV-30-C multifunction display from uAvionix received the flight-instrument equivalent of a shot in the arm—make that a shot in the panel—with the FAA approval of a software upgrade that enhances the instrument’s capabilities.
The Bigfork, Montana, company announced the certification of its software update on June 3. Highlights of the change include the ability to integrate with a range of GPS navigators and Genesys Aerosystems S-Tec autopilots, which marks a significant easing of everyday operations for instrument and VFR pilots. Another notable advantage: The software update is available free of charge for current AV-30-C users.
Other features that come with the upgrade include a turn coordinator, high- and low-voltage indicator, tracking of minimum and maximum G forces, and a vertical speed indicator on the traffic display. The AV-30-C now can interface with most panel-mounted GPS navigators to display course and glideslope guidance via the uAvionix AV-HSI PMA (listed at $799 on the company website), giving pilots functions such as horizontal and vertical guidance, heading bug synchronization, and GPS steering across as many as four AV-30-C displays.
uAvionix first stirred the general aviation market in 2018 with its tailBeacon ADS-B transponder, which offered pilots a relatively simple and inexpensive means of compliance with ADS-B Out requirements. The AV-30 instrument followed for experimental aircraft in 2019 and gained certification in 2020 while maintaining the popular themes of simplicity and affordability.
