Making the most of his free time

Growing up on the coastline of New Jersey, Joey Miuccio was never one to swim with the tide. After earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration through the University of Central Florida, he didn’t want to start a run-of-the-mill office job like his classmates.

Conflicted as to what he should do next, he thought of his friend’s dad, who was an airline pilot.

“He used to go on surf trips with us all the time....When storms would come through from hurricanes, he would somehow always have the day off. He had a good schedule, also made a lot of money, and he had a nice house on the beach,” said Miuccio.

Inspired by the possibility of what he could do with his free time if he became an airline pilot, he enrolled at Melbourne Flight Training, accumulating 1,500 hours of flight time as well as all the ratings he needed to kick start his airline career.

Now with four years of airline experience, Miuccio has utilized his days off to complete in multiple ultramarathons and Ironman triathlons. He began posting his training routines for these incredibly demanding races on social media, and before he knew it, he accumulated nearly half a million followers on Instagram alone.

“My page was really only fitness until I reached the airlines, and I started doing pilot day in the life videos, and that’s what really took my channel to the next level,” he said.

While creating social media content in addition to flying for an international airline keeps Miuccio’s hands full, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I just document my life instead of keeping a strict filming schedule. Because, you know, I could get called in to fly anytime,” he laughed.

As far as filming aviation content, Miuccio stressed that safety should always remain the top priority.

“I can film the walk-around and stuff like that but the second our checklist says your personal electronic devices are to be off, they’re off. I can’t film in flight.”

Whether Miuccio is logging miles in the air or on the ground, his journey shows that a pilot’s schedule, when embraced with intention, can open the door to adventure. And while his aviation journey may have started with a desire to avoid a conventional desk job, carving his own path has taken him far beyond what he first imagined.
