Aircraft renters insurance checklist

What you need to know before you fly

Many pilots who rent or borrow aircraft assume that the FBO, flight school, or aircraft owner’s insurance will protect them if something goes wrong. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.

In many situations, the aircraft owner's policy may provide limited protection—or none at all—for the pilot operating the aircraft. If you are found legally liable for an accident, incident, or damage to the aircraft, you could face significant out-of-pocket expenses. Aircraft renters insurance can help protect you from those financial risks.

When evaluating renters insurance options, it is important to remember that not all policies are created equal. A lower premium may seem attractive, but differences in coverage, limits, and policy provisions can significantly impact your protection. Before purchasing a policy, use this checklist to ensure you are getting the coverage you need.

Coverage checklist

Policy basics

  • When does my coverage become effective?
  • What is the policy's coverage territory?
  • Are there any restrictions on the types of operations or aircraft covered?

Aircraft damage coverage

  • Does the FBO, flight school, flying club, or aircraft owner require aircraft physical damage coverage?
  • If so, how much coverage is required?
  • What types of aircraft are eligible for coverage under the policy?
  • Does the policy include a no-fault deductible benefit?

Liability protection

  • What liability limits are available?
  • Does the policy have a per-passenger sublimit or a more restrictive per-person sublimit?
  • Does the policy include legal defense costs if a claim or lawsuit is filed?
  • Can my employer or another organization be added as an additional insured if needed?

Additional benefits

  • Does the policy include medical payments coverage?
  • Are passengers' personal effects covered?
  • Are claims-free or AOPA member discounts available?
  • Are there any optional coverages that may fit my flying activities?

Applying for coverage

Purchasing renters insurance is typically a quick and straightforward process. You'll choose the amount of liability and physical damage coverage you need and provide information about your:

  • Pilot certificate and ratings.
  • Total flight hours.
  • Recent flight experience.
  • Aircraft types flown.
  • Claims or loss history, if applicable.

The right policy should reflect your individual flying activities, experience level, and financial protection goals.
