Valdez, Alaska

Gateway to fantasy worlds

Valdez is a small town on Alaska’s Prince William Sound, famous in the pilot community for its iconic yearly STOL competition and globally infamous for the disastrous Exxon oil spill that occurred in 1989.

The airport is tucked along a mountain range, and the waterfront downtown is just a few miles west. Seasonal restaurants line the wharf, which bustles with visitors, fishermen, and oddly, bunnies. These fluffy feral house rabbits hop all over town, an always-growing population that legend says grew from escaped pets following the 1964 earthquake that reshaped the town.

Everywhere you turn in Valdez, you’re greeted with views that look like gateways to classic fantasy worlds—Lord of the Rings, Farseer, Skyrim. Glaciers, the sound, mountains, and waterfalls are all visible from the main streets. Visit the Valdez Brewing Company, where they have indoor and outdoor seating, a food truck, and beverages with an ode to the bunnies in town.

Or check out the hatchery a short drive away, where you might spot a bear or eagle and will certainly see a ton of fish. There are also glacier and wildlife cruises, fishing charters, heliskiing, and more. Nature is the main draw in this cozy town, and it is a fitting place for anyone looking to get off the typical Alaska tourist trail.
