The United States is very large, and even if you make an effort to visit other states near you, sometimes you just don’t have an excuse to drive the seven hours to Kentucky from the AOPA headquarters in Maryland, for example. So, instead of committing to a long road trip filled with traffic and other drivers, hop in an airplane instead.
That long trip to Kentucky from Maryland turns into a four-hour flight.
The beauty of general aviation is broadening your horizons, discovering places you never would have gone to, and meeting people who live far away. The fun of flying doesn’t have to end when there’s no perfect maneuvers or landings to chase. Become a fearless adventurer and fly further than you’ve ever gone before, stop to refuel, and keep going.
It’s a fun way to hour-build if you’re working toward your commercial certificate. Even if it’s just for a $100 burger or a quick refuel before heading back. Make it a challenge to visit every state within your aircraft’s range, why not?
Whether alone or with company, in an aviator’s case, the sky isn’t the limit, it’s only the beginning.
