Yes, it’s that time of year where kids (and fathers) panic when they realize Mother’s Day is already here. It snuck up on us despite the fact that it happens at pretty much the same time every year. But you’ve done the same ol’ thing year after year; a card and flowers.
Don’t get me wrong, that’s good! Show mom some love; she had to put up with you your whole life. But what if you want to do something a little extra special for mom this year? Well, I’ve got some ideas for you.
Take mom on a flight. Yep, I’ve done this. By complete coincidence my mom and I hopped on board a C-47 during a D-Day demonstration flight in 2019 on the day before Mother’s Day. It was nothing short of memorable, but highly impractical and even more unlikely that you’ll see the same random coincidence.
But something you can do is take her up as your co-pilot. Get a plane (or helicopter if you prefer the whirly kind of aircraft) from your local flight school, flying club, or even your personal plane if you be sure not to make mom sick. Take her up and show her what you love so much about flying. And take loads of pictures (when it’s safe to do so) to cherish the memory later. Just don’t scare her; you already did that plenty when you were younger.
Speaking of pictures and cherished memories, why not set up a family photo session? Either of your family to send to her (you know she loves to put those pics up over the fireplace), or of your family plus mom! Either way, you can’t go wrong.
What about displaying those pictures? What if mom lives far away? Well, you know they make those digital photo frames just for that reason, right? If not, go grab one. They’re inexpensive and you can upload your latest pics throughout the year. She’ll love it!
How about a memory book or photo book? Keep all those cherished memories together to remind her of what a wonderful kid you were. Just don’t include the pics of the time you covered your brother in mud and he smeared it all over the back door, or the time an errant baseball broke your brother’s nose. We want only the best memories! You’re an angel, and we want mom to remember only that part.
What if gifts or mementos aren’t your (or mom’s) thing? Do something, or anything, together. Go for a hike, a picnic, a drive, make dinner…the possibilities are endless. If you order take out, plan ahead because there’s nothing worse than waiting 4 hours to get your food.
Mom put in a lot of effort; show some effort of your own this Mother’s Day and make sure mom knows how much you love and appreciate her!
