Are you going to add more training courses to AFTA (e.g., instrument rating, commercial, etc.)

Presently, AFTA supports Sport, Recreational, and Private Pilot training. Of course, we are committed to advancing AFTA’s capabilities to serve the entire flight training community.  Future development plans include versions for the instrument rating, commercial license, and CFI rating. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive platform that meets the diverse needs of the General Aviation community.

I can’t see my students in the iPad app. How do I fix this?

  1. For a student that was previously viewed in AFTA:
After 90 days of inactivity, students are automatically changed to Inactive status. Changing the view from Active students (default) to Inactive students on the MY STUDENTS tab will allow you to see and select these students.
  2. To add a NEW student to AFTA:
    a. First, follow the AFTA Interactive instructions to ADD A STUDENT
    b. Next, follow the AFTA Interactive instructions to ASSIGN A STUDENT TO A CFI

Is AFTA part 141 approved? Will it be in the future?

While AFTA is not currently approved for part 141 training, we have begun petitioning the FAA to gain 141 approval in the future. We will be certain to let everyone know if/when that happens.

I made a mistake in a lesson, can I edit it?

Yes, flight information for previous lessons can be edited by CFIs in the iPad app.

  1. Select the specific lesson in the student’s lesson history
  2. Click the EDIT button, make the desired changes, and click SUBMIT

To maintain an accurate evaluation process, only the fields related to the flight details are allowed to be edited. Specific activity scores, comments, and notes cannot be changed.

I have a student with previous training time, do I need to start them from scratch in AFTA?

Not at all!  The STUDENT ASSESSMENT feature allows a CFI to input a student’s previously logged hours and evaluate their proficiency.  With a completed assessment, AFTA will generate the next appropriate lesson and put them on the most efficient, effective pathway to achieve their certificate.

  1. In the iPad app, select the DEVIATE button on the PREFLIGHT screen
  2. Select STUDENT ASSESSMENT and follow the prompts to complete the evaluation

Note: If you plan to evaluate a student new to you with an actual assessment flight(s), following the process as prompted works just fine.  However, if you are planning to evaluate a known student by assessing on the ground (without an actual assessment flight), enter 0.1 hours less for their actual total time to date and then complete the assessment with a (theoretical) 0.1 hour flight.  Trust us, this will sync their actual time with logbook times in AFTA, and they will be well on their way!

How are lessons assigned? Can I see the syllabus/curriculum behind AFTA?

Lessons are assigned to students based on their performance and progress within the app. This ensures that students have a solid foundation of skills before moving on to the next step. Our approach follows a building block methodology, where lessons are structured as interconnected blocks of knowledge and skills. To review the specific activities and tasks that comprise AFTA, access the “Activity” tab in the web portal (advantage.aopa.org) or refer to the “Activity Index” in the iPad app. It is important to highlight that the curriculum is not fixed in the traditional sense since the app adapts to each student’s unique learning requirements and progress, providing a personalized learning experience.

I am a new CFI, is AFTA right for me?

We definitely think so. New CFIs are benefiting greatly from the the automatically generated lesson plans based on student ability and experience, and online prep items automatically assigned for each lesson activity/task. Another great benefit is that AFTA is free for CFIs and flight schools. To get up to speed quickly with AFTA, each CFI is provided with a test student built into the system to explore, test, and see how the program works. Get started now by requesting a FREE account as a flight school instructor or as an independent flight instructor.

While setting up a new student, I logged a lesson before doing the assessment (for a student with previous training time). Is there A way for me to “reset” that student so I can put in their previous training time?

  • In order to perform an assessment (the process to add a student’s previous training time), it must be completed before you log any lessons in AFTA. If you accidentally logged a lesson in AFTA before doing an assessment, the student’s record can be reset to allow for completing an assessment. But please be aware that doing this will DELETE ALL of the student’s training data and you will have to re-renter any flight you have logged in AFTA.
  • If you would like to have the student’s AFTA record reset, please contact us at [email protected] or call 855-557-5263 during regular business hours.

I can’t AFTA find the app in the app store

Here is a link to the AFTA app. Keep in mind that this app is iPad only, which means it is not available in the app store from an iPhone.

Why doesn’t the portal have an instructor option

The website does not include an instructor-specific option because its primary purpose is to manage the overall business operations of the school, such as student-instructor assignments. The instructor-specific functionality is exclusively available in the iPad app. However, if you are an independent instructor, you will have access to the website as a "school employee" to manage the school's overview and business operations.

How can I record a checkride?

Taking your student on a check ride is a very exciting part of the flight training experience. Here is a video for recording a check ride with AFTA! Click this link to be taken to the video

My student is missing some course requirements, how can I complete them?

Most of the Course Requirements will be completed automatically as the student progresses through the course. However, there are some items that require individual CFI attention, such as endorsements and solo cross country requirements. This video will show you how to complete all of your student's course requirements!
