ADS-B off to smooth start |
The FAA's ADS-B Out mandate took effect on January 2, and the formal implementation of the new surveillance technology seems to be going well. About 120,000 U.S. civil aircraft were equipped when the mandate kicked in, an FAA spokesman said.

FSANA seeks data on practical test pricing |
The Flight School Association of North America (FSANA) is conducting a survey on practical test costs around the United States. The effort is to determine variations and extremes currently being experienced. FSANA conducted a similar survey in 2018. To add your input, see the website. The 2020 survey closes on February 7.

HAI names new president |
James A. Viola became president and chairman of the Helicopter Association International (HAI) on January 16. He replaces Matthew S. Zuccaro, who announced his retirement last fall. Viola most recently served as director of the Office of General Aviation Safety Assurance for the FAA. He is rated in both helicopters and airplanes.

Owner of restored Cessna gives back with intro flights |
Sometimes, all you have to do is ask. Texas pilot Greg Hughes asked an airport friend if he could have the man’s cast-off Cessna 150. He pitched the owner on a plan to restore it, start a small flying club, and use the Cessna to give youth and young adults free or low-cost introductory flights. Three years later, Lil Angel took flight.
