New oil gasket AD affects thousands of Continental engines
The FAA published an airworthiness directive September 21 adjusting the scope and instructions for replacement of oil filter gaskets on a range of Continental Aerospace Technologies Inc. engines. The AD affects an estimated 6,300 aircraft registered in the United States. READ MORE ›
Storm wrecks aircraft at Arizona airport
A powerful storm tore through Falcon Field Airport (FFZ) in Mesa, Arizona, on September 12. It damaged hangars, businesses, and at least 12 aircraft, including hangars that had been at the airport since 1941 and World War II-era aircraft. READ MORE ›
NTSB: Snapchat post caused fatal distraction
Pilot distraction, caused by posting to social media in flight during a low altitude pipeline patrol, was the probable cause of a 2021 crash involving a Cessna 182 that struck a radio tower guy wire in St. Louis, Michigan. The NTSB said two people reported that the Cessna's pilot posted a Snapchat video that showed the terrain ahead of the aircraft when it was about 5 to 10 miles southeast of the accident site. Wisconsin pilot opens flight school
Buck Richie decided his hometown of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, needed a flight school. So he opened one. Goose Aviation opened at Rice Lake Regional/Carl's Field (RPD) with a Cessna 172. "One week into advertising, I had 25 full-time students," he told the (Rice Lake) Chronotype. He plans to purchase an additional three aircraft and hire several flight instructors.
New Jersey airport gets new flight school
A new flight school, Phillips Aviation, launched September 1 at Hammonton Municipal Airport (N81) in Hammonton, New Jersey. Owner Michael Phillips said he opened the flight school in response to the huge demand for pilots, and because he is passionate about aviation and helping others to learn to fly. Plans include building two hangars with offices and simulators, Phillips told the Hammonton Gazette.

ASI releases analysis of T–6 midair at Reno Air Races
The National Championship Air Races at Reno, Nevada, ended with a midair collision between two pilots flying T–6 aircraft. The NTSB has not yet released its preliminary report regarding an investigation into the crash; however, the AOPA Air Safety Institute has released a preliminary assessment of the accident. The two T–6 Texans crashed midair upon landing at the conclusion of their race, claiming the lives of both pilots. View the video online or at ASI's YouTube channel.
