The rear side of the Los Angeles VFR Terminal Area Chart contains charted VFR flyways. These VFR Flyways are designed to help VFR pilots avoid major controlled traffic flows.
For instance, when departing Van Nuys airport to the west, it's probably wise to fly toward the Suplveda flood control basin then follow the flyway found just south of the Ventura freeway (101). Flying at or below 3,500 feet and 5,500 feet should keep you out of major traffic flows (the routes with small blue arrows and accompanying altitudes). Ground references make visual navigation easy. Make it a point to use these flyways or at least familiarize yourself with them when they're available.
