An early January field trip for 15 aviation college students included an inside look at how AOPA and the Air Safety Foundation work with the FAA and other government agencies to promote aviation safety. The University Aviation Association-sponsored trip was led by Dr. Gerry Fairbairn of Daniel Webster College and included students from that school and Central Missouri State University.

Their trip, part of an annual UAA week-long Aviation Policy Seminar, included visits with several government agencies and meetings with industry leaders who help formulate aviation policy.

While at AOPA, the students met with AOPA President Phil Boyer and heard ASF Vice President for Training Dick Hiner offer an inside look at "how sausage is made" when AOPA, ASF, and the FAA tackle policy and safety issues. Hiner pointed out for the students that AOPA and ASF must often ask hard questions and challenge FAA policy decisions to ensure that the final decision will be in the best interests of GA pilots.
