U.S. security officials are apparently demanding an expanded temporary flight restriction (TFR) over the World Economic Forum meeting scheduled to begin tomorrow in New York City. AOPA has learned that the FAA will issue a notam, most likely tomorrow morning, establishing an 18-nautical-mile TFR around the JFK VOR. Pilots flying in the New York area must make sure they have obtained all of the latest notams immediately prior to flight.
The notam is expected to require that aircraft within the TFR area be on a VFR or IFR flight plan, in communication with air traffic control, and operating with a discrete transponder code.
The TFR may provide "cut-outs" for Teterboro (TEB) Airport in New Jersey and Republic (FRG) airport in Farmingdale, New York.
The existing TFR prohibiting all flight within 2 nautical miles of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel remains in effect, as does the TFR around "ground zero," the World Trade Center site.
