NJ pilot background check bill goes to the governor for final approval

Mr. Phil Boyer, President
Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association
421 Aviation Way
Frederick, MD 21701-4798

Dear Mr. Boyer:

Your letter of May 22, 2002, urging Governor McGreevey to veto certain legislation requiring criminal background checks on flight students, has been referred to me by the Governor for a response. Thank you for expressing your interest in Assembly Bill 1649 and Senate Bills 432 and 1438, as well as providing an opinion on behalf of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association with regard to the issues addressed by these bills.

The Governor is aware of recent efforts undertaken by the federal government to address the safety and security of aviation in general and flight school training specifically. Should these bills pass both legislative houses and reach the Governor for consideration, your comments will certainly be included in his assessment.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your opinion on this matter.

Sincerely,

Leslie Skolnick
Assistant Counsel
