AOPA's Boyer urges Iowa governor to back $2.2 million in aviation funds

Governor Tom Vilsack
State of Iowa
Office of the Governor
State Capitol
Des Moines, IA 50319

Dear Governor Vilsack:

As president of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), the world's largest general aviation organization, representing nearly 400,000 members nationwide and 3,800 members in Iowa, I encourage your support for the aviation funding measures posed in Senate File 452.

AOPA is a strong supporter of aviation funding, in which the state can maintain its safe and efficient system of airports. The aviation funding measures appropriated under Senate File 452 will be utilized for important safety-related benefits such as maintenance of weather observing equipment, runway marking improvement, windsock replacement, and general aviation airport improvement programs. These are all safety-related programs and supporting these programs will enhance safe flying in Iowa.

Aviation is a worthwhile investment as it plays an essential role in the economic well-being of your state. According to a 2000 state aviation economic impact study prepared for the Iowa Department of Transportation, civil aviation generates more than $834 million annual economic activity and nearly 10,000 jobs in Iowa. In addition, Iowa's industries, trades, manufacturing, agricultural and fire services all depend highly on aviation. Many communities cannot hope to attract new industry and technology without a well-maintained airport system.

The safety, health, and future of Iowa's airport system depend on state funding. AOPA is hopeful for swift final passage of Senate File 452 in the House. Your support of the aviation industry, which is so vital to your state, can be demonstrated by ensuring the aviation funding measures of Senate File 452 are approved with your signature.

Sincerely,

Phil Boyer
President
