As you look forward to the Big Day - the day of your private pilot checkride - you and your CFI will sit down together and do some preliminary paperwork. You'll check your logbook to make sure you've completed (and your CFI has signed off) all the requirements for the private pilot certificate. Then you'll fill out an FAA Form 8710, which you will give to the designated pilot examiner (along with a few other documents) before you take your practical test.
FAA Form 8710-1, Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application, checks your information as you enter it to make sure that you've completed all required fields, and most important, checks data for accuracy. You then print it out, sign it, and give it to your DPE. You can use it to apply for the recreational, private, commercial, or ATP certificate; airplane single-engine, airplane multiengine, or rotorcraft catgory; and instrument rating.
