AOPA's Airport Directory Online contains information on more than 7,500 landing facilities and 6,200 FBOs and related businesses located throughout the United States ( www.aopa.org/members/airports/).
You may search for an airport using criteria such as the airport identifier, airport name, city, state, and zip code using the Quick Search feature. The Advanced Search feature allows you to find airports that fit your specific needs. For example, if you'd like to take a camping vacation with your airplane, the Advanced Search will give you only those airports that have camping on the field. You can also choose an airport based on runway length. Airport diagrams are usually available, although not all are represented. U.S. terminal procedures are now available for airports with instrument approaches. After selecting an airport, if procedures exist for that airport, a U.S. terminal procedures link will be displayed. Follow that link to download the procedures for that airport.
"AOPA exists to do the 'heavy lifting' on behalf of general aviation in the nation's capital," said AOPA President Phil Boyer recently. AOPA plays a vital role in ensuring that this nation's general aviation pilots enjoy — and will continue to enjoy — the freedom of the skies. The association's political action committee (PAC) raises money for just that purpose. Currently, AOPA PAC is seeking a legislative solution to a ruling that would allow the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) and the FAA to immediately suspend the certificate of any pilot deemed by the TSA to be "a threat to national security." Boyer has called this "an infringement upon our basic constitutional rights" and "un-American." AOPA PAC raises money to support candidates for election who are friendly to GA. Since federal election laws prohibit the use of any portion of AOPA member dues to support candidates, support of AOPA PAC is through individual contributions. "AOPA PAC works because you make it work," said Boyer. To learn more about AOPA PAC efforts to protect your right to fly or to make a contribution, contact AOPA PAC, 601 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Suite 875, Washington, D.C. 20004. Visit AOPA Online ( www.aopa.org/whatsnew/caphill.cfm) for the latest information on what's going on in Washington that affects general aviation.
AOPA credit card holders can now make FBO rebate requests online. The FBO rebate program, a joint effort between AOPA and MBNA America, N.A., offers a 5-percent credit rebate on purchases at qualified FBOs. The program, which began in 1997, has returned more than $10 million to AOPA members. "We developed this program to help in AOPA's mission to keep flying affordable," said Karen Gebhart, AOPA senior vice president of products and services. When an AOPA member logs onto his or her online credit card account, a link to the rebate form can be found on the statements page, account services page, and snapshot page. Three simple steps are then required to submit a request for a credit card rebate on qualified FBO purchases: select the form, select the statement, and select the transaction. A confirmation of the projected AOPA rebate amount is then sent to the member.
