From Kitty Hawk to microjets: Brand-new seminars at AOPA Expo 2003 in Philadelphia inform and educate

Pilot education has been a mainstay of AOPA throughout its history since being founded in Philadelphia in the late 1930s. AOPA Expo 2003 in Philadelphia emphasizes that tradition by offering a timely selection of exciting brand-new seminars to complement popular sessions from recent years. A jam-packed schedule of 84 seminar sessions runs essentially wire-to-wire from Thursday morning Oct. 30 through Saturday afternoon Nov. 1 to keep pilots at the forefront of safe, fun, and efficient flying.

New topics range from the sands of Kitty Hawk to computers of the twenty-first century to the realm of jets. Darrell Collins, National Park Service historian, will not only address the opening luncheon, he'll also bring the "Miracle of Kitty Hawk" to life in scheduled seminars. Greg Bowlin from Jeppesen will review the recent computerized evolution of navigational references in "Charts: Paper to Electronic Transition." And former NBAA President Jack Olcott examines the new owner-flown jets in "Process for Transition to Microjets."

Seminars are categorized under six focus areas—general interest, proficient pilot, all pilot, medical issues, safety, and owner—that include at least 10 distinct topics. Registrants can mix and match seminars according to their interests, preferences, and schedules. A few seminars are conveniently offered more than once, so you can still attend if a conflict occurs. New general-interest seminars include "Self-Flying the African Bush" with Barbara Feader, "Miracle at Kitty Hawk" with Darrell Collins, and "Cuba by Private Aircraft" with Jack McCormick.

New proficient-pilot offerings include "WAAS: What Does It Mean for You?" with AOPA's Director of Advanced Technology Randy Kenagy and "Winter's Worst: A Northeast Nightmare" with AOPA Pilot magazine weather guru Tom Horne.

The all-pilot category features new seminars titled "The Kings on Risk Management" with Martha and John King, and "Update on 100LL Avgas" with AOPA Pilot magazine's maintenance expert Steve Ells.

The AOPA Air Safety Foundation will debut a new safety seminar, "Watch This! Maneuvering Could Be Hazardous."

Brand-new seminars in the owner category include "Is Ownership on Your Horizon?" with Scott Sky Smith, "Vacuum-System Basics" with Steve Ells, "When, What, and Why Do a Pre-Buy" with Scott Sky Smith, and "Aircraft-Engine Technology: Power of the Future" with panelists from the major engine manufacturers, moderated by Pilot magazine Editor in Chief Tom Haines.
