AOPA continues push for new Texas airport
AOPA is continuing to put pressure on Texas legislators to build a much-needed airport in the central part of the state. AOPA Southwest Regional Representative Shelly Lesikar testified before the Texas House Transportation Committee on Tuesday in support of House Bill 2656 that would jump-start efforts and provide funding to create a new airport near Austin.
"We need this new general aviation airport, and we need it soon!" Lesikar told the committee.
AOPA has been fighting tirelessly to restore GA facilities to the region ever since the City of Austin announced that it was closing Robert Mueller Field. The airport along with the privately owned Austin Executive Airport closed within 60 days of each other in 1999.
"General aviation isn't going away, it's increasing. And the central Texas region needs to be prepared for the economic growth and capacity requirements needed for the future," Lesikar added.
The bill is sponsored by State Rep. Mike Krusee, chairman of the Texas House Transportation Committee.
