The California Senate voted 29-10 to pass Assembly Bill 1358, which would require charter schools to notify (in writing) the State Department of Education if they are planning to lease or acquire a new school site within two miles of an airport runway. Public schools already are required to do so. The State Department of Transportation would have to grant approval before a governing board or charter school could lease or acquire the property. "With the proliferation of charter schools in California, the legislators recognized the value of this bill to protect the welfare of students and airports," said Roger Cohen, AOPA vice president of regional affairs. The bill is awaiting signature by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. AOPA urges members to contact Schwarzenegger, asking him to sign the bill.
