AOPA advocacy helps defeat bill to gut Kansas aeronautics division

A bill in the Kansas legislature that would eliminate the State Division of Aviation as a separate entity within the Department of Transportation appears to have stalled for this session. Opposition voiced by AOPA Midwest Regional Representative Bob Dickens, AOPA headquarters, and the Kansas Airport Association was instrumental in bottling up Senate Bill 184 in the Senate Transportation Committee.

The committee received so much opposition to the proposal that state Secretary of Transportation Debbie Miller stated her intention to withdraw the bill. Moreover, Committee Chairman Sen. Les Donovan saw to it that the bill was not scheduled for further discussion within his committee prior to the February 22 deadline for the bill to cross over to the House. Though stalled for this session, the bill is not technically dead until it is voted down.
