New year, new start

It's time to think about the goals we'd like to achieve in a brand-new year. Pilots might resolve to lose weight or start exercising -- particularly if we have a medical coming up -- and we'll also be pondering our aviation aspirations.

If 2005 is the year you are going to start flying, there's no better place to begin than AOPA Flight Training Online. Read a synopsis of the FAA requirements for a private pilot or recreational pilot certificate. Use our databases to find a flight instructor at your airport, a dedicated flight training academy, or a college or university that offers an aviation curriculum. Use the TurboMedical interactive online form to help you prep for the medical examination needed to obtain a student pilot certificate (or renew an expired medical). AOPA Flight Training Online is conveniently organized into the basic stages of flight training -- presolo, solo, maneuvers, cross-country, and flight-test prep-to present articles, resources, and tools that complement every phase of training.

For the private pilot who's considering a new certificate or rating, AOPA Online offers practical test standards and sample FAA knowledge test questions for virtually every certificate and rating. Be sure to use our improved search engine to look for pertinent articles from the archives of AOPA Pilot and AOPA Flight Training. If you have questions, the highly qualified pilots in our Pilot Assistance Center are available to take your calls weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern at 800/USA-AOPA.

Perhaps your goals extend to the realm of safety -- you're going to challenge yourself to become a safer, more proficient pilot. The AOPA Air Safety Foundation has developed online interactive courses, safety quizzes, and numerous other resources on night flight, collision avoidance, flying in windy conditions, communicating with air traffic control, and operating at towered and nontowered airports, to name a few. Most of the online courses offer credit under the FAA Wings proficiency program.

There's no better time than the present to work on those New Year's resolutions. With AOPA, you're on your way!
