Nevada bill would help improve rural airports

AOPA is urging Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn to sign Special Session Senate Bill 1, which would help improve rural airports. The bill would appropriate $500,000 to an aviation fund to match money from the FAA for the enlargement, improvement, or maintenance of rural airports and air navigation facilities. "In an emergency, or when citizens in Nevada's more remote communities need specialized services, patients and donated blood and organs are transported by air to trauma centers and major medical facilities. Moreover, many light industrial and manufacturing firms, and agricultural, mining, and livestock businesses depend upon airports for transporting time-sensitive parts, materials, and documents. Rural communities cannot hope to attract new industry and technology without a well-maintained airport," AOPA President Phil Boyer wrote in a letter to the governor.
