Should an airport be able to restrict VFR operations just because of one company's corporate retreat? Airport management has decided to close Friedman Municipal Airport in Hailey, Idaho, to VFR traffic during the peak arrival period on July 5 and peak departure period on July 10. The corporate event has been held annually, but this is the first time VFR traffic has been restricted. "While the proposed restriction on all VFR operations is intended to relieve expected ground congestion at the airport due to increased transient operations and limited ground capacity, AOPA is seriously concerned that such operational restrictions are being implemented solely to discriminate against VFR operations and to provide IFR operations exclusive use of the airport," AOPA said in a letter to the FAA and airport manager. "All aircraft should have equal and nondiscriminatory access to the airport during this time frame."
